What we do
In Oxford, we aim to be at the forefront of delivery of colorectal surgery. We offer services both to the local population and specialist treatments to those beyond.
Within the unit, there is always a specialist consultant colorectal surgeon to deal with emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
For planned or elective cases, we are able to offer within the unit just about every aspect of colorectal surgery. Through the concentration of resources and expertise in Oxford, we are able to offer state of the art treatment for advanced colorectal cancer. Additionally, we can offer tailored therapy for patients with large benign polyps or early cancers that avoid some of the risks of “traditional” approaches. We are a screening centre for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. We are also a training centre for the National Training Programme for Laparoscopic (keyhole) Colorectal Surgery.
Many of our patients, of course, do not have cancer. We have one of the largest experience in the country of surgery for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease and provide an integrated service with our medical colleagues. We also have a particular interest in patients with pelvic floor disorders. These patients commonly have a range of symptoms including incontinence, constipation, difficulty opening their bowels or a prolapse. We also offer up to date treatments for the common problems of piles and other anal conditions.
